2012 : a challenging year for Taiwan?s petrochemical industry

2012 will be a challenging year for TaiwanÂ’s petrochemical industry amid rising crude oil prices, the macroeconomic slump and increased production capacity from rivals in China and the Middle East, as per a market researcher in Taipeitimes.com. Crude prices are estimated to hover at US$100-110 per barrel, pressurizing profit margins for midstream to downstream petrochemical products, according to the Industrial Economics and Knowledge Research Center at the Industrial Technology Research Institute.

Producers from Middle East disclose new November PP, PE prices to Egypt

Towards the end of last week, Middle Eastern producers started to announce new prices for November shipment PP and PE cargoes in Egypt, while the regional suppliersÂ’ new offer levels were in line with the globally bearish trend as well as the marketÂ’s expectations, as per ChemOrbis. So far, two major Middle Eastern producers revealed new PP and PE prices with decreases from October offer levels, to a market that was expecting decreases, given the globally weak demand

First batch of ethylene from China arrives in Taiwan

In a move that will help it cope with an ongoing ethylene supply shortage, Taiwan’s state-owned oil refiner CPC Corp has imported its first batch of ethylene from mainland China, as per CNA. The 6 week annual maintenance and repair shutdown started on Aug. 10 at CPC’s fifth naphtha cracker with capacity to produce 500,000 tpa of ethylene, creating a shortfall of 40,000-50,000 tons of ethylene.
