Kuwait likely to contest US$2 bln Dow Chemical award

Kuwait has vowed to fight a verdict that ordered it to pay more than US$2 billion (Dh7.34bn) to Dow Chemical, as per Thenational.ae. This verdict is one of the largest corporate arbitration awards given in favour of Dow as Kuwait failed to go ahead with a petrochemical venture with the US company. The International Chamber of Commerce’s international court ruled that Kuwait has to pay Dow a total of $2.16 bln in damages for pulling out of the US$17.4 bln “K-Dow” joint venture with state-owned Petrochemicals Industries Company (PIC).

IDB to boost competitiveness of Mexico?s petrochemical sector with US$600 mln loan to Braskem-Idesa

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has approved a US$300 million A Loan complemented by a syndicated B loan of approximately US$300 million to finance Etileno XXI, MexicoÂ’s biggest private petrochemical project, a Braskem-Idesa joint venture. The loan will be granted to Braskem-Idesa S.A.P.I., a joint venture by BrazilÂ’s Braskem SA and MexicoÂ’s Grupo Idesa, to develop, build and operate an integrated petrochemical complex.

Sibur to build giant petrochemical complex

Russia-based Sibur is considering building a new giant petrochemical complex in Tobolsk (in Tyumen, western Siberia), which is expected to be the largest in Russia and one of the largest in the world, according to Dmitry Konov, CEO of the company, as reported in Europeanp Plastics News. The new project, which is expected to be known as ZapSibNeftehim, involves the construction of a pyrolysis facility with a capacity of 1.5 mln tons of ethylene.

China?s total polymer imports retreat in September

According to the recent data released by the Chinese Customs Agency, ChinaÂ’s total plastics imports posted a monthly drop in September 2011, falling from the 1.51 mln tons in August to 1.41 mln tons in September, as per ChemOrbis. On a year over year basis, however, total plastics imports in September were higher compared to the same month of 2010. Apart from the main exporters including South Korea (274,973 tons), Saudi Arabia (189,006 tons) and Taiwan (164,479 tons), Thailand (94,790 tons), the US (89,822 tons) and Iran (88,793 tons) were the top three polymer exporters to China in September 2011, with all of these countries, except for the US, reducing their total export volumes to China compared to August.

ChinaÂ’s total polymer imports reached the highest level of 2011 in August as per ChemOrbis. According to the recent data released by the Chinese Customs Agency, China imported 1.51 tons of plastics in August 2011, with the countryÂ’s overall imports reaching a new high over the first eight months of 2011. On a year over year basis, total plastics imports in August were also the highest figure seen for the month going back to 2001
