Formosa Group sues academician over pollution study

Formosa Plastics Group has filed NT$40 million lawsuit a libel suit against an academician for releasing a study that warned if a major petrochemical project was to be launched in central Taiwan, the average life span of local residents will decrease by 44 days and 393 people will die of related diseases islandwide, as per focustaiwan.tw. The sued professor Tsuang Ben-jei, released a report last year saying 66 factories in Taichung and Yunlin County, including the Formosa group’s sixth naphtha cracking plant, were found to have been emitting heavy metals and dioxins, a known human carcinogen

Formosa plan for safety checks at Mailiao complex to be complete by August 2012

Taiwan’s government has accepted a plan by the Formosa Plastics group for safety checks at its fire-hit Mailiao complex that will see operations suspended in stages until the end of August 2012, as per Reuters. The government had ordered some facilities at the complex closed after a series of fires between July 2010 and August 2011 that also triggered public protests over safety standards

Industrial Development Bureau gives time until October for suspension of Formosa?s 48 plants

The Industrial Development Bureau has decided to give FormosaÂ’s 48 petrochemical plants more time to coordinate their suspension timelines, but the suspension must begin in October, as per CNA. This decision came after the fourth meeting of a government investigation team, which was established to inspect the safety of Yunlin’s Mailiao industrial zone, to review plans to suspend factory operations by the Formosa Plastics Corp., Nan Ya Plastics Corp., and the Formosa Chemicals & Fibre Corp. The three companies were asked to suspend operations at their 48 plants in Mailiao, pending safety inspections
