Solvay Specialty Polymers and Rhodia Engineering Plastics are strongly committed to expand in Asia and are specifically focusing significant investments in China as a platform for growth in the region. The separate Solvay Specialty Polymers and Rhodia Engineering Plastics research and development facilities in Shanghai will be combined into one world-class R&D Center at RhodiaÂ’s campus in the Xinzhuang industrial zone. A new four million euro building will be added to the existing Rhodia research center with two full floors dedicated to polymer formulation and processing and includes an injection molding facility for customer trials

IDB to boost competitiveness of Mexico?s petrochemical sector with US$600 mln loan to Braskem-Idesa

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has approved a US$300 million A Loan complemented by a syndicated B loan of approximately US$300 million to finance Etileno XXI, MexicoÂ’s biggest private petrochemical project, a Braskem-Idesa joint venture. The loan will be granted to Braskem-Idesa S.A.P.I., a joint venture by BrazilÂ’s Braskem SA and MexicoÂ’s Grupo Idesa, to develop, build and operate an integrated petrochemical complex.

Sinopec, SABIC JV for 260,000 tpa PC complex in Tianjin

Sinopec SABIC Tianjin Petrochemical Company (SSTPC) laid the foundation for a polycarbonate production complex with 260,000 tpa capacity, at a groundbreaking ceremony in the Tianjin Binhai New Area. China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) and Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) have earlier cooperated on an ethylene production project with a capacity of one million tpa. With two sets of phosgene free production systems, with an annual capacity of 130,000 ton each to be built, the new polycarbonate production complex started construction yesterday (April 3) and is expected to be operational in 2015.

Metabolix grants a patent license to NatureWorks LLC for new biopolymer blends

Metabolix, Inc., a bioscience company focused on bringing environmentally sustainable solutions to the plastics, chemicals and energy industries, has announced that it has granted a non-exclusive license to NatureWorks LLC for the U.S. patent No. 5,883,199, titled “Polylactic Acid-based Blends,” to make, use and sell blends of polylactic acid (PLA) with certain other polymers including polybutylene succinic polymers (PBS).
